Let’s go over the types of platforms you can serve your ads on. They fall into three categories: display, mobile in-app, and video. Let’s look at display ads first.
Display ads
Display ads are advertisements you view from a web browser on a computer or mobile device. Think of the ads you see while browsing your favorite website. They can be banner ads shown on the top of the page or skyscrapers running up the sides.
Mobile in-app ads
Mobile in-app ads, not to be confused with mobile web ads — which are display ads — are ads that appear within mobile applications.
Mobile in-app ads use a different tagging system from display ads. For mobile in-app ads, app developers must integrate Google’s mobile ads software development kit (SDK), which allows the app to communicate with the ad exchange and request ads.
Video ads
Video ads, as well as ads for games, differ from both display and mobile in-app ads because because they interact with a video player, which has different coding requirements.
Video ads can play at different times: before the main video content starts, at some point during the main video content (much like a TV commercial), or in a post-roll position after the main video content finishes. In addition to video files, you can use overlay text and images ads.
We’ve looked at the three different types of inventory platforms. Knowing what they are is important especially if you’re considering expanding your content beyond a website.
